The tea is brewing, the backfill is disappearing and the sample processing area is in full operation. Yes, the Boncuklu 2014 excavation season has begun!

Breakfast on day 2 Breakfast on day 2

The Boncuklu Project formally opened on Monday July 21st 2014 and will take place until mid-September. With a team of 25-45 here through the season, it will be another busy year. We expect to complete excavation of the building sequence in Area H and continue investigation of what we believe is an external work area at the centre of the site in Area M. In Area P we will continue to investigate a long building sequence and a new surface scrape planned in Area L will allow us to look at the settlement sequence at the site’s eastern edge.

Diggers are assembling from the UK, Australia, China and the USA , with the University of Liverpool geoarchaeology team here in early August. We will be further developing the on-site visitor facilities and interpretation – including developing plans for a garden and reconstructed houses, and trialing a new tablet-based electronic excavation recording system developed with the FAIMS group in Australia. So, there is much to be getting on with. Internet depending, we will be updating the blog whenever we can, so watch this space.
