Applications to participate in the Boncuklu 2014 excavation season due November 8!

The Boncuklu Project is now recruiting its dig team for 2014. Students and other interested parties can apply for participation in the following ways:

  1. Apply to a fee-paying residential field school for university credit through the Institute of Field Research, contact Prof. Doug Baird for further details (dbaird@liverpool.ac.uk).
  2. Australian, UK and Turkish residents may apply for one of 15 volunteer positions on the project in which field costs are covered by the Boncuklu project. Volunteer positions are available for 8 weeks (approx. July 15th to Sept 15th) or in 4-week blocks (Block A: July 15-Aug15 or Block B: Aug 16-Sept 15). Preference will go to those who can attend those periods for the full term (e.g. all of Block A).

VOLUNTEERS & FIELDSCHOOL PARTICIPANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TRAVEL COSTS TO THE EXCAVATION

Participants will take part in all aspects of the excavation process, including excavation, planning, recording, sample processing and heavy residue sorting. Excavation uses single context recording and planning. In 2014 we plan to convert to an electronic recording system with collaboration of the FAIMS group (Australia).

Living conditions are basic and most participants will sleep in large dormitory tents with showers and toilets available in the dighouse. Food is simple but sustaining. We have broadband in the dighouse and a regular bus service allows convenient access to Konya and national/international connections. Konya is a major Turkish city and is well connected by flights to major centres (Turkish Airlines and Pegasus) and buses everywhere else. As we are guests in the traditional village of Hayiroglu all participants must dress modestly (no shorts, uncovered shoulders etc) and behave in a culturally sensitive manner.

Applications

Due to Turkish government regulations all participants must be named on the excavation permit, which has to be submitted in late November 2013. People not named on the permit cannot, under any circumstances, take part in the project under pain of legal sanction and deportation. As a result of this deadline applications for places must be made by close of business on Friday Nov 8th 2013 by email to (for those in Australia or nearby regions) Dr Andrew Fairbairn (a.fairbairn@uq.edu.au) or, for those from the UK and Turkey, Prof. Douglas Baird (D.Baird@liverpool.ac.uk). For selection purposes in your application please include:

  • A brief CV detailing work history and archaeological experience
  • A statement of why you want to go and what you expect to achieve
  • A statement of which period you wish to attend (8 weeks; Block A; Block B)
  • A statement of how realistic your participation is given the financial burden of travelling to Turkey
  • Details of two referees

If you are accepted you will have to complete several forms for inclusion on the excavation permit and send them to Prof. Baird by 18th Nov 2013. These forms must be completed as specified and are sent with passport photographs. All of this entails a cost. Furthermore, you will also have to pay for your research visa (typically $120/£75, it varies by nationality) before you leave and your Turkish residency (typically $120/£75) when you arrive, without which you may not stay at the site.

For further information see www.boncuklu.org or email (Australia or nearby regions) Dr Andrew Fairbairn (a.fairbairn@uq.edu.au) or, for those from the UK and Turkey, Prof. Douglas Baird (D.Baird@liverpool.ac.uk).
