25 JULY 2013: SMALL FINDS

Archaeology is well known for the slow and time consuming processes which can take days, weeks or even months to produce results. Documentation procedures such as writing out context sheets, labelling removed contexts and planning the squares can take up many hours of the day. Our finds are carefully studied at the excavation house depot (see above) and accessioned into the museum archives. We are very lucky to already have some great finds early in the 2013 season. Here is a small sample of what have been excavated in the last few days, including of figurines and beads – the word “boncuk” is Turkish for bead, so it is not surprising that we have unearthed several this week at Boncuklu the “beady mound”, both on site and in the heavy residue.

    Hi,
What kind of implements do you think they used to drill the holes. Have you found any drilling tools?
    Thanks
    Linda

      Hi Linda,

Often at other sites of the same period as Boncuklu the occupants used flint or obsidian drills. We have not found drills such as these at the site, which leads us to believe these holes may have been made using a reed with sand as an abrasive.
