22 JULY 2013: EXCAVATION BEGINS, PHOTOS OF NEW AREAS, FLOTATION UP AND RUNNING!

Cleaning the trenches is an important beginning to any season but today the dig team was very excited to start formal excavation. Trench P expanded to the north in order to investigate a distinctive building which may be rectangular, and therefore exceptional, or an unusually large curvilinear structure. In Trench H we are continuing to remove contexts from Building 12 where we can see the floor slumping over burials. Meanwhile in Trench M we are continuing to investigate the midden. In Trench N we have expanded northwards to investigate midden and the possibility of finding potential structures surrounding Building 6 and to understand whether the wall of Building 6 was free standing or cut into the midden in this area.

For many of the Dig Team, this is the first time they have excavated such an intricate site and getting their “eye in” is imperative. Under the guidance of the supervisors, their previous archaeological experience is easily adapted to this new complex stratigraphy.

Thanks to the previous year’s hard work there was no flotation or wet sieving backlog and Flotation got off to a great start. The Heavy Residue team is powering through the large amount of heavy fraction to the delight of Supervisor Sarahminda Czajka.

  • thanks for info

  • As a novice in archaeology, I can only imagine the excitement and anticipation the Dig Team must feel while uncovering each layer of the intricate site. It’s impressive to see how their previous experience seamlessly adapts to the complexities of this new stratigraphy. The dedication of the Flotation and Heavy Residue teams is commendable, as they power through the backlog and meticulously analyze the findings. This blog post has sparked my curiosity and ignited a newfound appreciation for the meticulous work of archaeologists.

  • It’s truly fascinating to read about the meticulous excavation and exploration at this site. The dedication of the Dig Team, especially in adapting to the complex stratigraphy, is impressive. The absence of a flotation backlog is a testament to the previous year’s hard work, and Supervisor Sarahminda Czajka’s enthusiasm in overseeing the Heavy Residue team is contagious. These updates make me feel like I’m right there in the midst of the archaeological discovery process.
