19 JULY 2013 UNBACKFILLING FINISHED AND THE REVEALING OF THE TRENCHES

Equipped with gloves, shovels and wheelbarrows the de-backfilling of trenches N, H, M and P have been completed. The dig crew have enjoyed the shrubbery removal and become accustomed to the silty-fine deposits as the geotextile is uncovered. The crew are excited to take back the protective layer and peer at the contexts they will be removing through the next few weeks. As a pleasant surprise, the weather has been particularly mild which has made the heavy physical labour underway less grueling. We understand the weather is soon to heat up again so we are making the most of the agreeable conditions.

The careful cleaning of the trenches has begun and the dig team is becoming accustomed to the incredibly fine stratigraphy and complex plaster floors. Though the weather has been fine, the Konya Plains’ winds rush through the trenches and spread fine dirt upon the just-swept areas to the dismay of many.
