A sea of mudbricks

West of Hayiroglu village a sea of mudbricks is drying in the sun that we will use to re-create the buildings of ancient Boncuklu. Based on archaeological finds and experiments carried out last week by Steve Chaddock, 1000 bricks are being mixed and shaped by hand. The bricks are made from soil known locally as the “black soil”, an alluvial sediment, mixed with chopped grass stems and shaped by hand into oval forms approx. 35cm x 15cm x 7cm in size. Made quite differently from the bricks still crafted around Konya today, the Boncuklu replicas are now drying and will be used in construction of replica buildings over the next 2 weeks. The replicas are part of our visitor centre and will also help us to test ideas about how the buildings were made. Watch here for more information on progress of this project.
