On one of our weekends off, a group of us decided to travel to the ‘Lake District’ west if the Konya province, everyone was excited to wash off Boncuklu dust in the warm waters of one of Turkey’s inland lakes. Our first stop was Beyşehir, a beautiful lakeside town on the first of the many lakes. We arrived just in time for Iftar and decided to brave the crowds and jostle for a table by the fast flowing canal. We were seated just as the azan could be heard above the excited guests. The table was already set and we could hardly see the tablecloth beneath the spread of delicious appetizers; olives, pickled chilli, dips, Turkish-style bread, dolmates, dates and fruit. Then came the mains, followed by the customary çay (tea). No more than fifteen minutes later the chatter of hungry individuals was replaced by the clatter of chairs and tables and then, before we knew it, the restuarnt was practically empty! Next stop, Lake Eğirdir – let’s hope we can fit into our bathing suits.
